What is Medicare?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions. It helps cover healthcare costs such as hospital stays, doctor visits, and prescription drugs.
What are the parts of Medicare?
Medicare consists of four main parts:
- Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services.
- Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment.
- Part C (Medicare Advantage): An alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies that often includes additional benefits.
- Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription medications.
When can I enroll in Medicare?
You can enroll in Medicare during several enrollment periods:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): A 7-month period that begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.
- General Enrollment Period (GEP): January 1 through March 31 each year if you missed your Initial Enrollment Period.
- Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Available in certain situations, such as losing employer-sponsored health coverage.
- allowing you to make changes to your Medicare coverage.
