What is Medicare?
What are the parts of Medicare?
- Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services.
- Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment.
- Part C (Medicare Advantage): An alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies that often includes additional benefits.
- Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription medications.
When can I enroll in Medicare?
You can enroll in Medicare during several enrollment periods:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): A 7-month period that begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.
- General Enrollment Period (GEP): January 1 through March 31 each year if you missed your Initial Enrollment Period.
- Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Available in certain situations, such as losing employer-sponsored health coverage.
